Risk Awareness: we built a game that measures OHS students’ knowledge

As part of a university research project (BAP), we developed a browser-based game to measure the knowledge of OHS students. The game was used as a measurement instrument in a doctoral thesis.

From the Risk Awareness game: a factory scene marked with pedestrian walkways and protective barriers.

The problem with measurement

OHS knowledge is mostly measured with multiple-choice exams. An exam shows whether you recognise the right answer; it doesn’t show whether you notice a hazard when you are inside an environment.

What we built

Under a university’s Scientific Research Projects (BAP) programme, we developed a game called “Risk Awareness” (Risk Farkındalığı) to measure the knowledge level of OHS students. The game is WebGL-based: it needs no installation and runs directly in the browser. Sending participants a link is enough, which makes it easy to reach large groups of participants in different places.

Use in research

The game was used as a measurement instrument in a doctoral thesis. A tool we built being used to collect data in academic research captures the core of Imverge’s approach: a game can be designed not only to teach but also to measure.
